Magic of Felas

On Felas, magic is seen as another form of energy. It exists in all things, and if one knows how they can manipulate that energy to affect the world. Storms, for example, can be heavily affected by magic; magic storms are stronger, last longer and are more intense. There are locations around the world with higher concentration of magical energy, the most consistent being the oceans. Seastorms of Felas have a high chance of being fueled by passive energy.

Modern humans are not born with an inherent capability of magic, but can learn to control it through a lifetime of study. There are those born who cannot cast magic at all, as well.

Human Magicians

Magic is fueled by the magician's own energy, or through conduits. Overexertion can cause dizziness, fatigue and nausea; the less energy one has to cast a spell, the more likely it would fail, backfire or even cause what's known as a "burnout". Backfires can either be minor, when the spell fizzles harmlessly or fails to react at all, or they can be major, harming the magician and those around them. Intense backfires can even permanently affect the magician's ability to cast spells, to the point where they are blocked from performing any magic. Burnouts are the most extreme form of backfires, causing harm to the magician depending on the nature/element of the spell - and even kill them.

Elements of Magic

Different cultures have different views of magic, but here I am going to use what's called the "Universal Magic Elements". Out of lore, it's the system I build off for different cultures' systems; in lore, it's the modern Atrian system that's increasingly used across the globe.

Each element has a philosophy relating to it: an emotion/mindset the magician meditates on, and a symbolic body part. In regards to the mindset, Atrian magicians believe studying each element's philosophy is key to powerful magic, even if most people only actively cast spells of one or two elements.

FIRE

Philosophy: Passion
Body Part: Skin

Fire Magic includes other heat sources, like lightning or magma. In many cultures it overlaps with Light Magic, but in the Universal Elements they are distinct from each other. It is used for cooking, crafting (smithing, glass-making, etc.), lighting and warmth, and more. Unlike mundane fire, magic-born fire does not spread or extinguish itself without the magician's intent.

Fire's philosophy of passion teaches magicians to not fear their emotions, to let them feel to their fullest extent while also not letting their emotions control them. Magicians who are not in control of their emotions tend to have more backfires, their mind clouded and unfocused. Fire magicians use their emotions as additional fuel, the more intense their emotions the more powerful their spells can become.

Skin is Fire's symbolic body part because of the traditional Atrian belief that the flesh was the source of body heat.

WATER

Philosophy: Adaptibility
Body Part: Blood

Besides liquid water, Water Magic also includes ice, humidity, and water-based liquids. In the Universal Elements it's heavily associated with Life and Nature Magic. It is used for agriculture/irrigation, sewage systems, food preservation and medicine.

Water's philosophy of adaptability teaches the magician to adapt and overcome challenges, to never discredit a system just because it's unfamiliar. Water magicians must remain loose in their casting; if their body is too tense or their mind is too stubborn, their spells are more likely to backfire.

Blood is Water's symbolic body part because it's believed magic energy flows through the magician's blood.
